Find information about Oberlin College human physiology, registering for elective courses, and taking practice exams for free online. Which college degrees give you the best chances of finding employment after graduation? If you major in human physiology, for example, there are a variety of specializations that may appeal to you, such as medical assisting or occupational rehabilitation. Check with the human physiology department for a class list, as well as course registration dates. Due to advances in medical systems, there is a growing skill-shortage of graduates from human physiology programs, and nursing professionals in general.

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) designation is the first step in becoming a nurse. After Becoming a CNA, you will assist in caring for patients by monitoring vital statistics, bathing, feeding and maintaining personal hygiene. Most CNA programs can be completed within a few months, allowing you to begin working. As the public ages, nursing care has become a major source of employment for new technical program graduates.

The next step in a nursing career is to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). This is a one year long program, in which you'll work under an RN, and be assigned advanced care work. Practice requirements for LPNs vary from state to state, but basic duties include passing meds, wound care, and administering feeding tubes. 1-year nursing certificate programs train students to pass the licensing test, in order to become an LPN or LVN. It is common for 90% or more of the class to find nursing jobs within 6 months. You don't have to become a registered nurse to make good money, as a licensed practical nurse with several years of work experience can earn well over $40,000 a year.

Medical Lab Technologist Training

Medical laboratory technologists and lab technicians collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances. An entry-level job for lab technologists usually requires a bachelors degree in medical technology or life sciences. Medical lab technicians (lab techs), on the other hand, need only an accredited associate's degree program in clinical laboratory science. Coursework emphasizes laboratory skills, including safety procedures and lab management. Medical laboratory technologists and technicians can obtain a general certification as a medical laboratory technologist or technician, respectively, or a certification in a specialty, such as cytotechnology or medical biology. For credentialing information, visit the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.

Employment of medical lab techs is projected to grow 16% in the coming years. An increase in the aging population is expected to lead to a greater need to diagnose medical conditions, such as cancer or type II diabetes. Average salary for medical and clinical laboratory technologists and technicians was $50,550 in May 2015, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
